I want to apply for a Council or Housing Association Home

Uttlesford District Council operates a choice based lettings approach to letting council properties.

HomeOption

►  Apply straight to Home Option

Social housing is normally provided by councils and Housing Associations and is subsidised by the Government to assist people in housing need. Rent levels vary and include "affordable rented" which can be up to 80% of the average cost in the private rented sector (market rents). In Uttlesford, social housing is let through the Home Option scheme sometimes referred to as the "council waiting list".

Home Option is a Choice-Based Lettings scheme which operates under the Icon for pdf Allocations Policy [732.91KB]

Applying for a transfer

Existing social housing tenants can also apply for a transfer through Home Option but you also have the right to Exchange homes with another social tenant.

Please note that in most circumstances existing social housing tenants will not be offered a property unless their rent account is clear. You will also not usually be considered for other accommodation if the management of your current home is not satisfactory or if you are under notice for a breach of condition of tenancy.

Most residents will be eligible to join the list if they have a local connection however; there are some people that will not be.

Expressing an interest in a property

Once you have completed an application and returned all of the required documentation, you will be placed in a band which will reflect the urgency of your need for housing. You will then be able to logon and view the available properties which are advertised weekly.

If you want to be considered for any of the properties available to you, you will need to express an interest or "bid". The application in the highest band for the longest time will be usually be considered first but there are some instances that others get priority but it will say this on the property advert.

It is not possible to say how long you will be waiting to be housed. However, home seekers who choose to bid for a variety of properties across the District will generally be housed more quickly than people who have specific criteria about where they want to live and the property type.

Change of Circumstances

It is essential that you let us know when your circumstances change because we cannot offer you a property if your application is not up-to-date.

If you have moved address or wish to add a joint applicant to your application please log in to your account on the HomeOption website and complete the change of circumstances form. It is likely that you will have to send in supporting evidence to confirm your change of circumstance.

Renewal of Application

Once a year you will be prompted to renew your application. If you fail to do this then your application will be cancelled.
